For years, I’ve watched from afar and wondered what could be done in sports outside of my own focus.  For those that don’t know, I actually run a baseball training facility.  After spending 6 season’s in the professional baseball as a Pitcher in the Kansas City Royals & Toronto Blue Jays organizations, I opened up my own training facility.  Throughout the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with numerous collegiate baseball players and several professional players.  It probably goes without saying, but I love sports.  Mostly all sports!

Working with baseball pitchers, I study a wide range of overhead athletic movements in sports outside of baseball.  Naturally, volleyball is one of those sports.  You see, there are a ton of similarities between spiking a volleyball and throwing a baseball!! My focus with the baseball training is to give young athletes the best opportunity possible to continue playing beyond high school.  In order to do that, there has to be an understanding of what measureable tools are valued by college coaches.  For baseball pitchers, the number one question that gets asked revolves around how much velocity a pitcher possesses.  But what does this have to do with spiking a volleyball?

Here’s the big secret (it’s really not, or at least shouldn’t be): Almost all sports require a pre-requisite of tools first and foremost, before any college coach will show interest.  Then, and only then, does all of the other stuff matter!  So to bring this back to volleyball, what “tools” would be considered pre-requisites for an attacking player in volleyball?

To go along with measurable’s such as height and length (think wingspan), there are 2 major tools that matter that can set you apart as a front row player!  One is vertical jumping ability.  Ever watched a collegiate volleyball game?  You must be able to play above the net.  This is obviously a big deal for blocking and creating better angles for spiking.  The 2nd major tool is the ability to end points with Kills!  This is where velocity comes into play.  The ability to hit the ball at higher velocities provides the opposition with less reaction time and increases your likelihood of hitting through blocks! The good news is that it can be trained!!!

ARE YOU READY TO DOMINATE ABOVE THE NET??
